Dan Wilson's trio turned a barroom anthem into a 90s touchstone, then quietly built a deeper catalog.
If you only know the last-call anthem, start with 'Secret Smile' or 'Across The Great Divide.' That's where the band's knack for melody really settles in.
They formed in Minneapolis in 1995, with Dan Wilson coming from the Replacements. Their debut 'Great Divide' in 1998 had 'Closing Time,' but their follow-up 'Feeling Strangely Fine' in 2001 didn't catch the same commercial wave. After a hiatus, they reunited for shows and a third album in 2014.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
