September 87 formed in Los Angeles in 1987 around vocalist and guitarist Emily Rose and drummer Ethan Hayes. They built a following in the city's new wave scene with live shows that leaned into atmospheric, introspective material.
Their debut album 'Lost in Translation' came out in 1992, anchored by the single 'Bad Dream Baby.' That song's blend of ethereal melodies and Rose's haunting vocal delivery connected with listeners beyond their local base. A follow-up album called 'Silent Shadows' arrived a few years later, continuing in a similar vein.
In 1996, Hayes was arrested on drug possession charges, which disrupted the band's momentum and put their future in question. Rose stepped forward to handle more of the creative direction during that period.
