Sergio Coelhão came from Juazeiro do Norte in Ceará, where the regional styles of forró and xotão were part of the local sound. He started playing accordion early, though the existing music industry at the time tended to view xotão as something of a regional curiosity rather than a national format.
His 1993 album "Tem Que Ser do Norte (Só Xotão)" gave him a wider audience. The title track became something of an anthem for Northeastern Brazil, and it helped bring xotão to listeners outside the region. Coelhão kept working in the genre after that, both performing and encouraging other musicians who played it.
