José Serguei de Jesus Coelho, who performed simply as Serguei, was born in 1943 and began recording in the late 1960s. His self-titled debut album arrived in 1971, featuring the track 'Rolava Bethânia,' which became his best-known song. He worked with musicians like guitarist Edgard Scandurra and bassist Antônio Carlos 'Peixe' Mattos, and his recordings sometimes included collaborations with artists such as Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil.
Serguei's music drew from rock, samba, and soul, with a vocal style that could shift from quiet to falsetto. His lyrics often dealt directly with personal and social themes. Later albums like 'Gita' from 1973 and another self-titled release in 1984 showed him moving through different sounds, from psychedelic folk to more experimental approaches.
Some of his material faced radio bans during his career, which lasted until his death in 1985. Songs like 'Estou na Lona,' 'Ouriço,' and 'Coleção de Vícios' have remained in circulation, covered by other artists in the years since.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
