Serj Tankian

Serj Tankian was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1967 and moved to Los Angeles with his family when he was seven. In 1994, he formed System of a Down with guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian, and drummer John Dolmayan. The band's music often addressed political themes, with their 2001 album 'Toxicity' becoming particularly well-known.

After establishing himself with System of a Down, Tankian began releasing solo material that explored different directions. Songs like 'Sky Is Over' and 'Elasticity' show him working outside the band's established sound. He's also collaborated with other artists, including his work with Khatchadour Tankian on 'Bari Arakeel' and with Sevak Amroyan on 'Amber'.

Tankian has been vocal about Armenian issues throughout his career, particularly regarding the Armenian Genocide. His activism extends beyond music, though he's faced criticism for some of his political positions. The band System of a Down was sued in 2005 over alleged song plagiarism, though they continued performing and recording afterward.

His solo work includes songs like 'Falling Stars' that continue his exploration of both personal and political themes. Tankian's music maintains the distinctive vocal style he developed with System of a Down while branching into different musical territories.
