Set Your Goals formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2004, with Matt Wilson on vocals, Jordan Brown and Augie Fruscella on guitars, Joe Saucedo on bass, and Dave Petrovich on drums. Their debut album 'Mutiny!' came out in 2006 and got some attention in hardcore circles. They put out five studio albums between then and 2016, including 'This Will Be the Death of Us' in 2009 and 'Burning at Both Ends' in 2011.
Their sound mixed melodic guitar riffs and catchy choruses with the energy of hardcore. Songs like 'Product Of The 80's' and 'Goonies Never Say Die' had Wilson's vocals driving straightforward lyrics about personal struggles. The band's drummer Dave Petrovich died in 2009, and Mike Ambrose joined after that.
In 2012, there was some noise about their song 'The Few That Remain' and what the lyrics meant. The band said it was about police brutality. They kept playing and recording through lineup changes, with Wilson, Brown, and Fruscella staying through most of it.
