Setherial formed in 1993 as part of the Swedish black metal scene. The band's core has included vocalist Nifelheim (Anders Brathen) and guitarist Leere (Martin Schulman) for much of their existence. Their debut album 'Nord' came out in 1996, followed by releases like 'Hell Eternal' in 1998 and 'Endtime Divinity' in 2003.
Their music includes songs like 'In The Still Of a Northern Fullmoon' and 'A Hail To The Faceless Angels' that fit within the atmospheric black metal style. In 2006, drummer Wrath (Kenneth Åkerman) died, which affected the band's lineup.
Setherial's 1999 album 'Lords of the Nightrealm' drew criticism for what some saw as far-right themes.
