Seven Mary Three formed in Minneapolis in the mid-1990s, with Jason Ross on vocals and guitar. Their debut album 'American Standard' came out in 1993 but didn't find much of an audience. Things turned around with their 1995 follow-up 'Rock Crown King' and its lead single 'Cumbersome,' which became a radio staple. The band's lineup included Casey Daniel on bass and Chris Murphy on drums.
They put out two more albums, 'City' in 1998 and 'Infinity' in 2001. Beyond 'Cumbersome,' their catalog includes songs like 'Lame,' 'Anything,' and 'Bark No Bite.' The group's sound leaned into straightforward alt-rock with some Southern rock touches, avoiding the grunge heaviness that was common at the time.
After 'Infinity,' the band's activity slowed. They never quite matched the reach of 'Cumbersome,' but that song kept their name in rotation on rock radio. Their story is mostly about that one big hit and the albums that came before and after it.
