Shadow Hearts formed in Nagoya in 1999 with Naoto Fukasawa on vocals, Ryuichiro Yamaoka on guitar, Eiichiro Matsuo on bass, and Hideki Yoshida on drums. They worked in a gothic rock style, with Fukasawa's vocals and Yamaoka's guitar lines giving their music an atmospheric quality.
Their song "Getsurenka" came out in 2008 and became their most recognizable track. It got used in various Japanese media, which helped the band reach a wider audience. Matsuo left in 2010 and was replaced by Kazuyuki Ogawa on bass.
