Shadow Manollde formed in Salvador, Brazil in the early 2000s, taking their name from capoeira master Manoel dos Reis Machado. The band was led by singer and songwriter Luzia D'Avila, with other members including guitarist Chico Chico, drummer Magary Lorde, and percussionist Mônica Salmaso at various points.
Their debut album 'Na Sombra da Manollde' mixed Afro-Brazilian rhythms with psychedelic rock and electronic elements. They followed it with 'O Último Disco' and the 2010 single 'Biscoito,' which became their most recognizable track.
In 2012, the song 'Filhos do Machado' drew criticism from some who saw it as glorifying violence. The band's performances and lyrics often addressed social and political themes, which sometimes put them at odds with conventional expectations.
