A Brazilian metal band that formed from Angra's ashes and kept evolving through lineup changes and albums like 'Ritual' and 'Resurgence'.
For a quick sense of Shaman, try 'Pride' from their debut and 'Where Are You Now?' from their 2021 album. They show the band's range without overcomplicating things.
Shaman matters because they carried forward the melodic metal sound Angra fans knew, but with their own identity. Songs like 'Pride' from their 2002 debut 'Ritual' became live staples, and later tracks like 'Resilience' and 'Freedom' showed how they blended heavy riffs with progressive touches and occasional Brazilian flavors. They never stopped putting out albums, from 'Reason' in 2005 to 'The Order' in 2018 and 'Resurgence' in 2021.
The band started in 2000 when three former Angra members, André Matos, Ricardo Confessori, and Luís Mariutti, joined guitarist Hugo Mariutti. Matos left in 2006, replaced by Alírio Netto on vocals, and they kept recording through the 2010s. Their sound shifted slightly over the years, from the dramatic 'Ritual' material to the more grounded 'Where Are You Now?' on later albums.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
