Archive material and source history

Shane MacGowan formed The Popes in 1997 after leaving The Pogues, the band where he first gained attention in the 1980s. The Popes included his wife Victoria Mary Clarke on vocals and Jem Finer on accordion, among others. Their 2003 song 'Lonesome Highway' became one of their better-known tracks, reaching the UK top 20.

Before The Popes, MacGowan had been in the punk band The Nips in the late 1970s, then helped shape The Pogues' mix of Irish folk and punk energy. With The Popes, he continued working in that general territory. Their recordings include The Snake in 1998 and The Crock of Gold in 2010.

MacGowan's writing often dealt with loneliness and drinking, heard in songs like 'Streams Of Whiskey' and 'A Rainy Night In Soho.' His public struggles with alcohol were well-documented, but he kept recording and performing despite them. The Popes gave him a vehicle for that work outside The Pogues.
