Shelzia formed in São Paulo in 2004 around Maria Luiza Jobim on vocals, Tiago Costa on guitar, Gustavo Teixeira on bass, and Alexandre Fontanetti on drums. They started with a mix of Brazilian rhythms like samba and bossa nova, then worked in jazz, pop, and rock as they went.
In 2008, their song "Falsos Amigos = Bons Amigos" became a hit. Jobim wrote lyrics about the tricky nature of friendships, and Gustavo Astra directed a video with Jobim moving through a hall of mirrors to match the theme.
They also put out "Novo Milênio." The band's sound kept shifting, picking up electronic and Afro-Brazilian touches along the way.
