Archive material and source history
Shemah formed in the early 1970s as a group of Mexican Catholics who wanted to set their faith to modern music. They mixed traditional Mexican melodies with rock and pop, which gave songs like 'Maria, Amor Infinito' and 'De Jesus Para Os Homens' a sound that felt both familiar and new to listeners.
Their approach wasn't always comfortable for everyone. Using secular rhythms and instrumentation for religious themes drew criticism from some conservative corners of the church. But the band kept at it, releasing albums like 'Espíritu Santo' in 1975 and 'El Señor Es Mi Pastor' in 1979.
Carlos Macías provided lead vocals through much of their work. The group's catalog, which also includes 'Gratia Plena' from 1984, stayed focused on spiritual themes, with tracks like 'Só Deus Te Basta' and 'Tudo No Seu Coração' continuing in that vein.
