Background notes

Archive material and source history

Shenandoah formed in Muscle Shoals, Alabama in 1984 with Marty Raybon on lead vocals, Jimmy Yeary, Ralph Ezell, Stan Thorn, and Mike McGuire. They came out of the same area that had produced other country acts, but their early albums didn't catch on right away.

Things turned around with their 1990 album 'The Road Not Taken.' The title track did well, and then 'Church on Cumberland Road' became their signature hit. That song, along with 'Next to You, Next to Me' and 'Two Dozen Roses,' gave them a string of country radio staples in the early '90s.

They had a clean, harmony-driven sound that worked well on songs like 'Ghost in This House' and 'Darned If I Don't (Danged If I Do).' Raybon's lead vocals carried those mid-tempo story songs that became their calling card for a few years there.
