Shook Twins

The Shook Twins are sisters Katelyn and Laurie Shook, who started playing music together in Seattle in the late 1980s. They built their sound through busking and open mics, drawing from folk and classical influences. Their first album, "What the Moon Brings," came out in 1992 and was followed by records like "Foreplay" in 1995 and "Brace Against the Storm" in 1997.

Their song "Long Time" appeared in 1995 and became one of their most recognizable tracks. The sisters' vocal harmonies are the core of their music, with Katelyn's lead voice and Laurie's backing parts creating a layered, intimate feel. Their lyrics tend toward personal reflection, dealing with ordinary emotional territory rather than grand statements.

They faced some early resistance from labels who weren't sure how to place their music, but they kept working independently. By the time "Familiar" arrived in 2000, they had established a steady presence in indie folk circles without major commercial breaks. Their recordings have a consistent, homespun quality that appeals to listeners who prefer subtlety over spectacle.
