Shooting Star formed in Seattle around 1980, with guitarist Van Stephenson and keyboardist Gary Gutierrez at the center. They put together a melodic rock sound that drew from bands like Journey and Foreigner, eventually adding bassist Jerry Hludzik and drummer Steve Thomas to round out the lineup.
Their self-titled debut came out in 1983, featuring songs like "Hollywood." But it was the following year's "Hang on to Your Hopes" that really connected. The single "Everybody's Crazy" broke through, landing in the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. That track, along with others like "Touch Me Tonight," defined their moment in the mid-80s.
They kept recording through the decade, putting out albums like "Silent Rage" in 1986 and "Time Goes By" in 1989. The band dealt with internal tensions and some legal issues with their label along the way, which complicated things. Their run was relatively brief, but songs like "Everybody's Crazy" have held up as solid examples of that era's radio rock.
