Shuggie Otis was born Johnny Alexander Otis Jr. in 1953 in Vallejo, California. His father was the bandleader and producer Johnny Otis, Sr., which meant music was part of the household from the start. At 17, he put out his first album, 'Here Comes Shuggie Otis,' which included the track 'Inspiration Information.'
That song, along with others like 'Strawberry Letters 23' and 'Aht Uh Mi Hed,' showed his approach to psychedelic soul and funk. His guitar work and production had a particular feel, but mainstream commercial success didn't really follow. He stepped back from recording for a long stretch.
In the late 1990s, he released an album also called 'Inspiration Information.' It brought some renewed attention to his earlier work. The songs from that 1970s period, including 'Sweet Thang' and 'Ice Cold Daydream,' have held up for listeners who find their way to them.
