Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars formed in 2003 while its members were living as refugees in Guinea during Sierra Leone's civil war. They started making music with whatever they could find, including bamboo sticks and empty cans, in a makeshift studio. The band's name reflects their displacement from the conflict.
Their music mixes traditional African rhythms with reggae and pop, often sung in Krio. One of their best-known songs, "You Can't Make Me Lonely," became something of an anthem in Sierra Leone. The band has had a changing lineup over time, with members including Ruban Kallon, Alhaji Fofanah, Mohamed Bangura, and King Solomon Sawaneh.
They released their first album, Living Like a Refugee, in 2006.
