Silver Apples formed in New York City in the late 1960s around Simeon Coxe III and drummer Danny Taylor. Coxe built a homemade electronic instrument he called the Metatron, which became the core of their sound. Their self-titled 1968 debut featured the track 'Oscillations,' a hypnotic piece that defined their early work.
That first album didn't fit neatly into the rock or psychedelic scenes of the time, and some critics dismissed it. But the duo kept making music, releasing 'Contact' in 1969. Songs like 'A Pox On You' and 'Dancing Gods' from those early records had a raw, pulsing quality that felt both primitive and strangely futuristic.
After Taylor left in 1970, Coxe continued under the Silver Apples name with various drummers over the decades, including Michael Lerner in the 1990s. They put out albums like 'Beacon' and 'Decatur' much later, and Coxe was still performing and recording until his death in 2020. The track 'Program' from their debut gives a good sense of that persistent, oscillating sound they never really abandoned.
