Simia formed in the late 1990s as a Spanish rock band. Their lineup included José Barranco on vocals and guitar, Sergi Castella on guitar, Xavi Capdevila on bass, and Martín Rodríguez on drums.
They released their first album, Confesión, in 2000. The title track from that record became their most recognizable song, a ballad built around Barranco's vocals and lyrics that dealt with regret.
After Confesión, the band put out several more albums through the 2000s, including El Reino de la Tristeza in 2002 and El Mundo Que Soñé in 2004. Their songs often touched on themes of heartbreak and personal struggle, which sometimes drew criticism alongside the praise.
