Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel met as kids in Queens, New York, and first recorded together as Tom & Jerry in 1957. They reunited a few years later as Simon & Garfunkel, putting out their debut album 'Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.' in 1964. That record included 'The Sounds Of Silence,' which became an unexpected hit after a producer added electric instruments to the original acoustic version.
Their sound was built around Simon's writing and their close vocal harmonies. Songs like 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' and 'The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)' came from albums such as 'Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme' and 'Bookends.' The 1970 album 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' was their biggest commercial success.
They stopped recording together after that, though both continued with solo careers. Simon later had hits on his own, including '50 Ways To Leave Your Lover.'
