Simply Red

Simply Red formed in Manchester in the early 1980s around Mick Hucknall's voice. Their 1985 debut 'Picture Book' established them, but it was the single 'Holding Back The Years' that broke through widely, with Hucknall's soulful delivery turning personal reflection into a radio staple.

Their 1991 album 'Stars' became a commercial peak, spawning the hit title track and the ballad 'For Your Babies.' That song, with its direct promise 'I'll always be there for your babies,' connected as a straightforward ode to parental commitment, avoiding grandiosity for something more grounded.

The band's sound pulled from soul and pop, delivered with a consistent, polished warmth across albums like 'A New Flame' and 'Life.' While the lineup shifted around Hucknall as the constant frontman, the music maintained its accessible, melodic core through the 1990s.

After a hiatus in the early 2000s, Simply Red resumed activity, but their defining period remains those late-80s and 90s records where songs like 'Stars' and 'If You Don't Know Me By Now' found a large, receptive audience.
