Sixto Rodriguez was born in Detroit in 1942. He put out his first album, 'Cold Fact,' in 1970 on Sussex Records. The record didn't get much attention in the U.S., but it found listeners in South Africa and Australia, where his songs about social issues connected with people living under apartheid.

For years, Rodriguez was mostly unknown in America while his music circulated overseas. Rumors spread that he had died, but he was actually living in Detroit, working construction jobs. A group of Australian fans tracked him down in the 1990s, which led to a documentary about his story.

His songs like 'Sugar Man' and 'I Wonder' have a spare, acoustic feel with harmonica and guitar. They're direct and personal, without much studio polish. After being rediscovered, he played some shows and put out another album in 2002 called 'Searching for Sugar Man.'
