Skik formed in the late 1980s as a Dutch folk-rock band. Their lineup included Chris Tates on vocals and guitar, Bas Muijs on bass, Hans Kuypers on drums, Gertjan van Zuilichem on guitar and mandolin, and Jan-Peter Hoekstra handling violin and accordion. They released their first album 'Waar is de zon?' in 1989.
Their 2004 album 'Jelle Skai' gave them one of their most recognizable songs, 'Jelle Skai + Eppie D.', which tells a story about a young man facing life's difficulties. Other popular tracks include 'Op Fietse', ''k Heb 't Licht Nog An', and 'Amsterdam'. They've continued releasing albums through the years, including 'In de gloria' in 2009 and 'Kleur' in 2014.
In 2004, Chris Tates made an offensive remark during a performance that was interpreted as racist. He later apologized for his actions. The band has maintained a following in the Netherlands with their blend of traditional Dutch folk elements and rock instrumentation.
