Skin Games came together in Seattle during the mid-1990s, a trio with Max Cohen on vocals and guitar, Eli Black on bass, and Jazz Lee on drums. They put out their first EP themselves in 1996 and spent a lot of time on the road, playing shows and building a following without much help from labels.
Their 1999 album 'The Serpent's Tongue' finally got them some wider attention, mostly because of the single 'Brilliant Shining.' That song had a strange, memorable pull to it, a mix of hard rock and something more atmospheric, with Cohen's voice sounding both urgent and detached. It became their one real hit.
After that, things got complicated. The band's live shows and general demeanor drew a lot of criticism for being too dark or confrontational. The members also dealt with personal issues, which became part of the story people told about them. They kept going until 2006, when the original lineup stopped working together.
