Skin Yard came out of Seattle in the late 1980s, part of that city's early grunge scene. The band included Ben McMillan on vocals, Daniel House on bass, and Matt Cameron on drums before he went on to play with Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Their first EP came out in 1987, followed by the albums 'Fist Sized' in 1988 and 'Hallowed Ground' in 1990.
Their sound had a heavy, aggressive quality that showed up in songs like 'The Birds' and '1000 Smiling Knuckles.' The band dealt with internal tensions and substance issues during their run, which ended after that 1990 album. They never reached the commercial heights of some Seattle peers, but their music stayed raw and direct.
You can hear that unpolished energy in tracks like 'Bleed' and 'Burn a Hole.' Skin Yard's recordings capture a particular moment in Seattle before the major label attention arrived, a sound that was more about intensity than refinement.
