Slade

Slade formed in 1966 in Wolverhampton, England, originally calling themselves Ambrose Slade. They started with a blues-rock sound but found their footing with a louder, more theatrical approach. Their 1971 album 'Slayed?' gave them their first major hits, including 'Coz I Luv You' and 'Get Down and Get with It.'

During the 1970s, they became known for anthemic singles like 'Cum On Feel The Noize' and 'My Oh My,' driven by Noddy Holder's raspy vocals and the band's stomping rhythms. Their live shows were a spectacle of bowler hats, platform boots, and sheer volume, capturing the over-the-top spirit of glam rock without the art-school pretensions of some contemporaries.

Later songs like 'Far, Far Away' and 'Rock'n'roll Preacher' showed a slightly more reflective side, but they never lost that knack for a shout-along chorus. They were essentially a working-class rock band that happened to wear glitter, and their music held up because the hooks were so straightforward and durable.
