Sleep formed in San Jose, California in the late 1980s around Al Cisneros and Matt Pike. Their debut album 'Volume One' came out in 1991, establishing their heavy, slow-moving sound in the underground. The following year's 'Holy Mountain' expanded that approach with longer tracks and more atmospheric layers, with the title track stretching past fifteen minutes.
After disbanding in 1995, Cisneros and Pike worked separately in bands like Om and High on Fire. Sleep reunited in 2009 and returned to recording with 2018's 'The Sciences.' Their songs like 'Dragonaut' and 'Marijuanaut's Theme' have remained staples of their live sets since.
