Sleepy Gonzales formed in Brooklyn in the early 2000s with Micah P. Hinson on vocals and guitar, Tom McBride on keyboards and vocals, Ian Hutson on bass, and Aaron Olson on drums. Their 2005 debut album included the song 'Sally On The Avenue,' which got some attention for its folk-influenced melody and lyrics.
They put out several more albums over the next decade, including The Great Deceiver in 2007 and The Tin Can Tourist in 2011. The band's sound had elements of indie rock and folk, with some experimental touches that didn't always sit comfortably with every listener.
Hinson's personal struggles with addiction and homelessness affected the band's work at times. They kept recording through 2016's Lost River, but the lineup and circumstances made for an uneven path rather than a steady rise.
