Slick Rick was born Richard Walters in London in 1965 and moved to the Bronx as a child. He started rapping in the early 1980s, influenced by the hip-hop scene around him. In 1984, he worked with Doug E. Fresh on "The Show," which helped establish his reputation for detailed storytelling.
His 1992 single "Children's Story" became one of his best-known tracks, a narrative rap that unfolds like a cautionary tale. Other songs like "Hey Young World" and "The Moment I Feared" continued his approach of building scenes and characters through lyrics. His voice, with its distinct British accent, made his delivery immediately recognizable.
In 1994, he released the album "Behind Bars," which addressed his time in prison earlier that decade. The record didn't shy away from personal history, but it also kept his storytelling style intact. Slick Rick's work has been sampled and referenced by many rappers who came after him, often for the way he could turn a verse into a short story.
