Smak formed in Finland in 1975 with vocalist Kari Peitsamo, guitarist Kojo, bassist Pekka Pohjola, and drummer Seppo Sillanpää. Their self-titled debut came out the following year. The band's 1977 album 'Kaukana pohjolassa' faced some censorship over its lyrics, which were seen as critical of government policies.
That same year they released 'Aikamme koittaa,' whose title track became something of an anthem. The song 'Crna Dama' also appears among their better-known work. Their lineup shifted over time, with players like keyboardist Mikko Rejström, guitarist Jukka Orma, and bassist Jarmo Nikku coming through.
They kept recording through the early 1980s, putting out albums like 'IV' in 1980 and 'Kuningas' in 1983. The music had a hard-hitting rock sound that connected with Finnish audiences during that period.
