Smash Mouth formed in San Jose, California in 1994, with Steve Harwell as their vocalist. Their debut album 'Fush Yu Mang' came out in 1997 and included the hit 'Walkin' on the Sun.' The band's sound mixed ska and pop with a light, humorous touch.
Their 1999 album 'Astrolounge' featured 'All Star,' which became their most recognizable song after appearing in the film 'Shrek.' That track, along with others like 'Can't Get Enough Of You Baby,' gave them a lasting presence in pop culture through the early 2000s.
They released several more albums, including a self-titled one in 2001. Harwell's personal struggles and a 2003 arrest drew attention away from the music at times. The band kept playing shows and putting out records, but never quite matched the peak of those late-'90s singles.
