Smile Empty Soul formed in Santa Cruz, California in 1998, coming out of that area's hardcore punk scene. The band's early years saw some lineup changes as they worked to settle into their sound. In 2004, guitarist Dave "Moose" Thomas was diagnosed with a rare spinal condition, but kept playing shows from a seated position.
Their self-titled debut album arrived in 2003, followed by 2005's "The Weakest." That album included "Finding Myself," a song that connected with listeners for its direct emotional weight. Other tracks like "Bottom Of a Bottle" and "Sleep Deprivation" became staples of their live sets.
In 2008, the band's song "Smiling" was used without permission in a Republican National Convention promotional video. Smile Empty Soul publicly objected to the political use of their music, which led to an apology from the convention. They kept recording after that, putting out albums like "Anxiety" in 2011 and "Eclipse" in 2015.
