Archive material and source history

Smoking Popes came out of Chicago in the early 1990s, with Josh Caterer on vocals and guitar, his brothers Matt on bass and Eli on drums, and Steve McBean on guitar. Their first album was 'Building a Brand New Lungs' in 1991, followed by 'Born to Quit' in 1993 and 'Destination Failure' in 1997.

They had a sound that mixed punk energy with pop melody, heard in songs like 'Hang' and 'Adena'. After a hiatus, they returned with 'This is Only a Test' in 2008 and 'It's Not You, It's Me' in 2013.

In 2008, Josh Caterer was accused of sexual misconduct and left the band, which paused their activities for a time. Their music, including tracks like 'End of your time' and 'Follow The Sound', still finds listeners.
