Smythy formed in Manchester in the early 2000s around singer-songwriter Marcus Smithfield, with bassist Emily Carter and drummer Tom Hayes. Their debut EP 'Echoes of Night' came out in 2003, and they followed it with their first full album 'Stay the Night' in 2005. The title track from that album became their most recognizable song.
After Carter left the band in 2008, Smythy kept recording. They put out albums like 'Monochrome' in 2007, 'Shadows of Time' in 2009, and later 'Into the Void' in 2012 and 'Cosmic Echoes' in 2015. Their sound shifted toward darker, more experimental territory over those years.
