Sob O Verbo

Sob O Verbo formed in São Paulo in the early 2000s, with João Mesquita on vocals and guitar, Guilherme Lirio on guitar, Renato Vaz on bass, and Gabriel Ribeiro on drums. They released four albums between 2006 and 2014, starting with their self-titled debut and including 1977 in 2011. Their sound leaned toward atmospheric rock with melancholic melodies, which found a cult following in Brazil's underground scene.

Their song 1977 became their most recognizable track, with its haunting arrangement and lyrics about lost love. Other songs like Belíssima Indiossincrática Assassina and Debaixo Dos Meus Pés showed their introspective lyrical style. The band faced some criticism for being too dark or lacking commercial appeal, but they kept to their own approach without much compromise.

They never broke through to mainstream popularity, but their small catalog resonated with a dedicated audience. After their last album in 2014, they haven't been very active, leaving behind a handful of records that still get played by fans of that particular strain of Brazilian rock.
