Soez formed in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1980s with Luiz Melodia on vocals, Alfredo Del-Penho on guitar, Lula Queiroga on bass, and Ivan "Mamão" Conti on drums. Their sound mixed Brazilian styles like samba and choro with jazz and funk touches.
In 1985 they released their self-titled album, which included "Água Pra Beber." The song, written by Melodia, became their best-known track. They put out several more records through the early 1990s, including Samba de Orly and Nós.
Melodia, Del-Penho, and Queiroga remained the core of the band through lineup changes. Other songs like "Ana" and "Bem Ou Mal" show their range within that Brazilian fusion approach.
