Sofa Surfers formed in Split in 1991, right as Croatia was coming out of its communist period. Their first album, 'Ekscentrik,' came out in 1993 and set a tone with its mix of post-punk and Balkan rhythms. The band's 1996 album 'Svijet je lopta' got some pushback for its political lyrics during a tense time.
They kept putting out records like 'Putujemo' in 1999 and 'Balerina' in 2004. The song 'Believer' from around that 1999 period found listeners outside Croatia. Other tracks like 'Can I Get a Witness' and 'Never go back' show the range they worked in.
The core of the band has usually been Ognjen Freddy on vocals and guitar, Matej Matković on bass, and Ivan Stančić on drums. They released 'Sloboda' in 2007 and a compilation called 'Sofa Surfers 20' in 2011.
