Their debut album 'Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret' came out in 1981 and included their version of 'Tainted Love,' a cover of Gloria Jones's 1965 song. That track became a massive hit, reaching number one in the UK and the US.
Almond's dramatic vocal style against Ball's stark electronic arrangements gave their music a particular tension. Songs like 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye' and 'Torch' from that period carried a theatrical, sometimes bleak emotional weight. They followed up with albums like 'The Art of Falling Apart' in 1983 and 'This Last Night in Sodom' in 1984 before initially disbanding.
The duo's lyrics and Almond's stage presence, which often involved cross-dressing, drew criticism at the time for being provocative. Their original run was relatively brief, but 'Tainted Love' has endured as a synthpop standard long after.
