Solano Jacob formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1980s around singer-guitarist Márcio Jacob, bassist Sérgio Solano, and drummer Juarez Alvarenga. Their sound pulled from rock, reggae, and Brazilian popular music, with lyrics touching on love, social issues, and spirituality.
Their 1991 debut album 'O Fogo É o Amor' gave them their breakthrough. The title track became a radio staple in Brazil, known for its melodic hooks and Jacob's soulful delivery. They followed it with albums like 'Vento Sul' in 1993 and 'Gaia' in 1997, building a following in Latin America and elsewhere.
Márcio Jacob's outspoken political views sometimes stirred debate, and the band's shifts in musical direction didn't always sit well with their early fans. By the late 2000s, personal struggles within the group began to affect their work, and the lineup eventually dissolved.
