Background notes

Archive material and source history

Som 3 formed in Salvador, Bahia in 1965, with Armandinho, Betinho, and Neguinho playing together. They mixed samba rhythms with blues melodies, a combination that wasn't common in Brazilian music at the time. Their song "Samblues" became their most recognizable track.

Their first album came out in 1970, also called "Som 3," and it included that song. They kept recording through the 1970s and into the early 1980s, putting out albums like "Casa de Samba," "Mosaico," and "Rio Acima." The band toured during those years, playing their music in Brazil and elsewhere.

Later compilations like "Som 3: Grandes Sucessos" in 1997 and a live recording in 2005 kept their music available. Armandinho handled vocals and guitar, Betinho played bass, and Neguinho was on drums and percussion.
