Son d'Play formed in 1998 in Arcoverde, Pernambuco, with Fredson on vocals, Valdério on bass, Dedé on guitar, and Gilmar on drums. Their early sound mixed forró with samba and funk elements. In 2003, they released their debut album 'Som Diferente,' but it was the 2005 track 'Viva a Bagaceira' from the album 'Pagodeira' that brought them wider attention.
Their lyrics often dealt directly with sexuality and social themes, which led to some radio stations refusing to play their music. Songs like 'Apaga a Luz,' 'Edredom,' and 'Piloto da Foda' continued in this vein. The band maintained a consistent lineup through subsequent albums including 'Pimenta com Sal' in 2007 and 'De Volta para Casa' in 2012.
Their music found particular resonance within Brazil's LGBTQ+ community, with 'Viva a Bagaceira' becoming something of an anthem.
