Son de Azúcar formed in Cali, Colombia in 1979, led by singer Wilder Medina. They played salsa with Afro-Cuban touches, building a reputation for energetic live shows. Their 1989 single "Ella No Es Como Yo" became their signature track, with lyrics that resonated as an anthem about women's strength.
In 1986, the band was involved in a bus accident that killed percussionist Jimmy Zambrano and several other members. The surviving musicians regrouped and continued performing. They released albums like "Energía" in 1983 and "El Tigre de la Salsa" in 1987, but it was "Ella No Es Como Yo" that brought them wider attention.
Their lineup included pianist Jorge Herrera, bassist Alberto Barros, and timbalero William "Pacho" Ocoró alongside Medina. The band's sound remained rooted in Colombian salsa traditions even as their most famous song traveled beyond those circles.
