Their sound pulls from traditional Cuban genres like son and rumba, built around Valdés's vocals and guitar work with a strong percussion section. They've worked with other Cuban musicians including members of Buena Vista Social Club.
In 2006, Valdés faced accusations that parts of 'Lola' were taken from a traditional folk song. The band defended the work, but the claim lingered. The group has included bassist Alfredo Martínez, drummer Luis Osmel Domingo, and percussionists Rafael Morales and Yoel Báez.
