Son Habana formed in Havana in 2007, a group of musicians who started playing together with an interest in traditional Cuban son. Their first album came out in 2010, and by 2014 they had released the song "Te Dejo Libre," which became their most recognizable track.
Their sound works with the rhythms of son, often adding trumpet and trombone lines over percussion and bass. The band includes Maykel González on vocals and tres, Rolando Cuello on bass, Magdiel Valladares on bongos, Alejandro Orta on drums, Ernesto Rodríguez on trumpet, and Alberto Mancebo on trombone.
In 2015, there were some claims that the melody for "Te Dejo Libre" had been taken from elsewhere, which the band said wasn't true. They've kept recording since, putting out albums like "Más Allá" in 2016 and "De Cuba Para el Mundo" in 2019.
