Son Kimbao formed in Colombia in 2004 with Jaime Andrés Higuera on lead vocals and guitar, David Robledo on bass, Carlos Sánchez on drums, and Juan Camilo Rodríguez on keyboards. They built their sound by pulling from cumbia, salsa, rock, and Colombian hip-hop, though they never settled into one category.
Their song 'Las Dulcigomas' became their calling card. In 2018, it drew accusations of promoting drug use, which the band denied, saying the lyrics were about celebrating life and culture.
They released albums in 2006, 2009, 2012, 2015, and 2019, including one self-titled and others called 'El Simio Bailón' and 'El Puma de Oro'.
