Sonido Mazter started out in Los Angeles in the late 1980s, originally called Banda El Mazo. They were part of the cumbia sonidera scene, with Sergio Gómez leading a group that included Omar Ruiz, Juan Manuel Medina, and Javier Vargas. They changed their name to Sonido Mazter as they became more known.
Their song 'Casi Siempre Estoy Pensando En Ti' got popular, along with tracks like 'El Sonido de Tu Corazón' and 'La Promesa.' They put out albums such as 'La Rebelión' in 1990 and 'El Mazter de los Sonidos' in 1991, working with artists like Los Tucanes de Tijuana and Banda El Recodo along the way.
They had some legal issues early on about music rights, and some of their lyrics drew criticism. The band kept going, with Gómez on vocals and accordion, Medina on keyboards, Vargas on guitar, and Ruiz on bass. Their music mixed cumbia rhythms with electronic beats and synthesizers.
