Sonim came together in Dakar, Senegal in the early 1990s, led by vocalist Ndiaga "Djiby" Diouf. Their sound pulled from traditional Senegalese rhythms and funk, and they built a reputation for energetic live shows. The single "Funki Seyo!" became their breakout track, its groove connecting with listeners well beyond Senegal.
They released albums like Yo Mbeur in 1999 and Ndombor in 2001. Other songs in their catalog include "Heibon-teki Onago no Jouken" and "KARE-RAISU no Onna." In 2002, the band got tangled in a lawsuit with a former manager, a dispute that put some strain on the group for a time.
They kept recording after that, putting out albums such as Africalite in 2003 and Retour in 2010. The core lineup featured Diouf on vocals, El Hadj Ndiaye on guitar, Bassirou Dieng on bass, Cheikh Tidiane Ba on drums, and Papa Ndiaye "Papito" Samb on keyboards.
