Soniya formed in Mumbai in the early 2000s around vocalist Sonia Joshi, with Kaustubh Pathak on guitar and Vinayak Netke on percussion. They released their debut album 'This Is The Way' in 2006, which included the title track that became popular. The band toured in India and abroad after that.
Their second album was called 'Shuruat' and dealt with themes of love and loss. A third album, 'Rooh', followed with more spiritual themes. Other songs in their catalog include 'Fantasy', 'Forgive Me', and 'Give In To Me'.
In 2009, Soniya faced plagiarism allegations regarding a song called 'Kabhi Na', which some said resembled an existing Pakistani song. The band maintained their innocence and continued releasing music.
